Sonata in E-Minor

by Catherine Simpson

jacks from the toybox, rusted

her old letters

an empty box of hair colorant.

love needs

                truth

love needs

                subtlety

the purpose of subtlety is to

                (not)

                                tell the truth

I keep these tucked away:

                cigarettes

                an old condom

                a dried flower

                a snapsot of a man

                walking away on a

                bridge, his hair ribboned

                with sun.
