Honest Work

He sands the wood
attached to this old Victorian home
with hands that are calloused
and hair covered with sawdust as white as snow
with a permanent smile on his face
and a shine in his eye
as bright as the three coats
of glossy varnish he will soon apply
to the old pine floors riddled with
black hand-cut square nails
he accepts the work he does
each day and says it is honest work
that builds character.
As he sands the floors…
