Beacon Street, March 26

by George Aaron Cuddy

Into an abyss they steamed ahead
their loyalty a solemn pledge
to save the lives of innocents
with not a thought of reticence.
Battling blaze and smoke-filled air
gasping men had devil’s care
shouldering their heavy loads
of pickaxes and fire hose.
Trained forever for this fight
embers now invade our night
a city cries in Spring again
for Boston’s best, brave firemen.
