church bells

by Josef Brustmann
translated by Paul-Henri Campbell

whenever his entire being listened to the sound of the church bells,
he felt was though
their sound didn’t come down to him from the spire
but spread out from his heart’s core
permeating his body, a gentle pressure, into his ear
and as though his ear passed it on up to the spire.
