Hunting

by Brett Peruzzi

At the Buddhist meditation retreat
one of the Sri Lankan monks
wards off the morning chill
with a blaze orange hunter’s cap.

It does kind of match his robe
and he is a hunter of sorts
– not of animals, this gentle man
who doesn’t eat meat
and won’t even swat a mosquito.

But of self-knowledge.
Armed with nothing
but his desire
to overcome suffering
he – we all – settle
on to our cushions
and plunge into the deep forest
of our minds.
