An Honor

by James W. Spain, II

I was honored to be in the company of many
as I walked the hallowed ground

In the very early hours
of this Memorial day

I thought of those that were
oh so close to me in life.

Those that loved and inspired me
as well as those that might not have.

I passed graves that held the final
remains of great men and woman

decorated in battle while
defending our great nation.

I also passed graves of regular souls,
people that loved their families while

doing the best that they could
to put food on the table.

There were famous writers
and governors of our great state too.

As the sun rose and reflected
on the polished granite monuments

I understood in my heart what it meant to
memorialize those that came before us.

I was honored to be in the company of many
as I walked the hallowed ground.
