Connected to the Stars

by Neil Ellman

(after the painting by Paul Klee)

We are connected to the stars
by a spin of silk
a string of yellow pearls
around the neck
of a a beam of light
reflected on the surface
of our thoughts
refracted by our dreams.

We are the mirror image
of the creatures in the sky
and they of us.

We are connected
to their eternity
and they to our brief lives.

  1. I especially like the first stanza.

I’m wondering which painting by Klee you are writing about. I really like ekphrastic poetry, and your poem definitely stands alone. I’m just curious now.

    Thank you.
