I Am My Mother’s Immigration Record

I breathe our island –
almond blossoms
(virgin buds)
tinged with salt air;
crying ashes from Mount Etna,
sweating the Mediterranean sea,
droplets onto black grit –

My great-grandparents’ sand.
My mother’s sand.

My sand.
